Pat Cummins has claimed 309 wickets in 71 appearances with an impressive average.

Australia's chair of selectors George Bailey has confirmed that captain Pat Cummins will be a central figure in the upcoming England-Australia contest.

Rumors had circulated that the veteran bowler might miss the series due to a stress fracture in his back that was still troubling him.

Previous updates from the squad suggested no official announcement had been made regarding Cummins' participation, with the five-Test series set to start on the 21st of November in Perth.

He revealed that his recovery is on track and felt positive about the prospects of participating.

"It's clear that time is getting short and various factors around that, aside from his injury, but additional elements," he commented.

"It's positive. [We are] really confident that he'll participate in a major part. With luck starting in Perth. If not, we'll adjust."

Injury History

He was sidelined the ODI and T20 games against both Asian and Trans-Tasman rivals recently after examinations confirmed a lower back issue.

Previous incidents include of recurring issues, with flare-ups in multiple past seasons forcing him out of three Australian summers in a short span.

Cummins stated he would be ""aggressive" and "take risks" in his recovery plan to make the squad for the series.

He mentioned that there was no confirmation if Cummins had begun bowling as part of his rehabilitation but admitted it was "getting tight" for him to recover fully for the opener.

Backup Options

In case of absence, veteran batsman Smith will lead the side.

All-rounder Cameron Green was recently pulled out from the ODI lineup for their ODI contests against the subcontinent side as a precautionary measure because of soreness in his side.

Bailey described it as a "minor" injury and mentioned that he'll feature in the Sheffield Shield, so will be "in a good place to deliver overs."

"We put so much time has gone into developing the strategy for him to be available for the first Test as an all-rounder," the selector detailed.

"Originally, he'd only feature in the first two ODIs anyway. How he handles the cricket bat in white-ball cricket, should it hinder progress for another day, we just made the decision to take a cautious route."
